Autumn Wrapped Pine Cone Ornaments

Nothing says cosy quite like a afternoon of pinecone collecting and crafting. An autumn tradition for us is to make a autumn tree and decorate it through out the season, it looks so beautiful and brings so much joy and warmth into our home.

This activity really is as simple as it sounds, but do you know what I love about it? the connection it brings. Take a blanket a basket full of colourful yarn in different textures down to a park or reserve where you know there will be pinecones. Spend some time choosing the best ones. Take some time together to sit in nature and weave a little magic. Winding the yarn in and out of the pinecone, being mindful about where the yarn is going.

Children love being purposeful and connected to task. I am very aware that this idea is a simple activity, but the best ones always are. There really is something special about weaving and wrapping that teaches patience care and practice. If you do not have access to pine cones try sticks or even rocks!

when you are complete the wrapped pine cones will make a darling addition to the small world table as beautiful tiny trees! you could even intentionally wrap them in seasonal colours to represent the changing tones of the seasons.

Adding a little tune as we wrap, adds to the fun, ‘wrap, wrap, wrap winding as we go, round, round, up and down, two and fro!’

A lovely game I love to play is asking children to wrap nature finds in yarn, making beautifully wrapped yarn sticks pinecones or rocks. Place them in a basket at the beginning of a gathering and at the end when the goodbye song has been sung the basket gets passed around and each child receives a gift made by another.
