DIY Watercolour Bookmarks

My beautiful first born has started his journey through the wonder of reading. Books are life. I remember being exactly the same as a child. Reading transformed my life, and I am currently witnessing the same unfolding with my beautiful boy. What an incredible thing learning to read is. I feel his whole world is now opening up, purely thanks to the wonder of reading.

He decided he needed a book mark, And also wanted to make some for the family and for his friends. So we decided to have a go at making some using our water colour paints and they turned out so beautifully.

You will need:

  • Watercolour paper
  • ruler
  • Scissors
  • Watercolour paints
  • Tape
  • Yarn

Start by cutting out your book marks to their desired size. Make sure you tape them to your watercolour board. How thick you tape them, determines the thickness of your border. My Son loved taking the time to tape them all by himself.

Paint!! Paint experimenting with the beautiful ways your water colour will blend. He absolutely loved layering and blending all of the different coloured rainbows.

Wait until fully dry, gently peel off your tape. Try and use a paper masking tape if you can this makes the peeling process much easier.

Create your tassel –

  • Step 1.. First, decide on the length of the tassel you want. Cut out a piece of cardboard that is 1/2 inch longer than you tassel length
  • Step 2.. Wrap the yarn around the cardboard; about 15 times or however much you like depending on your desired thickness. When you wrap remember that the tassel will be as thick as the yarn on both sides of the cardboard. Try to keep the yarn in the centre of the cardboard and do not allow it to spread out. Also make sure you are not wrapping the thread too tight that the cardboard is bending or too loose that the loops are slipping out. The tension should be even.
  • Step 3. Now we have to remove it from the form. Cut out a piece of yarn, thread it through a thick needle. Slip the needle between the cardboard and the yarn loops. Tie a knot. Slip the  loop from the cardboard carefully. Once it is off the card cut away any tails.
  • Step 4.. Tie the tassel at the neck. Neck is some 1/4 inch from the top. Tie the tassel at the neck. Neck is some 1/4 inch from the top. Cut out 6 inch of full strand of yarn or thin metal w to secure and attach the loops of tassel. Wrap this yarn over the loops some 1/4 inch down from the knot you just made. Tie securely.
  • Cut all the ends of the tassels evenly with a sharp scissors. Separate the yarn and fluff up your tassel.

Using a hole punch, create a hole in your book mark and tie on your tassel, these stunning book marks make the most incredible gifts!
